Kilpisjärvi

Visit Kilpisjärvi – the unique fell village

Welcome to Kilpisjärvi, the northernmost fell village in Finland! Surrounded by the vast wilderness of the Arctic region, Kilpisjärvi is the best holiday destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike. It offers breathtaking views of the iconic Saana Fell, sacred to the Sámi people. From its summit, you can marvel at the panoramic view stretching across the three-country border of Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

The rugged beauty of the arctic tundra

In Kilpisjärvi, you can immerse yourself in the pristine Arctic tundra, surrounded by endless snowy landscapes. The weather is as dynamic as the seasons, with rapidly changing conditions even within a single day. The surrounding wilderness, shaped by the Ice Age, is home to rare vegetation and unique mountain species.

The northern latitude creates exceptional seasons and a notably long winter:

  • Usually in early November, Lake Kilpisjärvi freezes over
  • Around the end of June, the lake ice melts
  • By May, the sun no longer sets below the horizon, making the night as bright as the day
  • Even in the middle of summer, patches of snow often decorate the fells
